It's sad because even though they seemed to hate the suggestion of rules, they still had some order to them. The older ones taking care to make sure the younger ones were being taken care of... It's such a damn shame.
That no one just took their whole family and left? I get the... not wanting to leave the place where your home and life is, but even just patting little Timmy on the shoulder and telling him not to burn down the house for the next month while you run for your lives is... weird.
Maybe the logic was if something happened to them, the kids would be in the city and the other adults could take care of them when they got back? Instead of their kid being lost without their parents in a place they don't know?
That's one of the only things that would make any sense. Better to have a familiar place and other people helping with the kids over having them stuck who knows where without food or anything.
