[Well... he's already got his notebook here in his lap. So he'll flip to the case file.
Most of it's info that Kotetsu will recognize, but he might also see at the very top of the page, in bold print are the words DE L'ACIER À LA FUMÉE 2.]
The culprit was likely a woman. It seems that Rex was trapped in the storage room -- he wrote those dying words, not his daemon, as we previously thought. His body was moved after he was killed.
Susato could have done it. But there's a problem with that...
She was found in a "closed room." The only feasible entrance was the single door, which had a blanket pushed under it from outside. Rex must have already been dead at that point... so this situation still suggests that a third person was on the scene.
I know she wanted the truth to come out. It was a suspicion, but... I had it confirmed to me tonight. She was controlled, just like others.
But the reason I mention it... that's part of why Rochalizo had gone after her. He was under the impression she'd want him to go after her instead of someone innocent. She tried to save them both. Tried to escape so neither of them would have to die...
[He's holding his cigarette away from them while processing this. It seems to have gone forgotten long enough for a clump of ash to plop down from it.]
She was helping me solve the case. Everything she did and said, it... makes sense.
[ He gives him all the time he needs. His hand... lightly rubbing at Kim's back. ]
It's something that people need to know. That she wanted people to know.
A bitter pill from this place, but having that truth out will help everyone involved find some peace in having that answer. And maybe... some people will understand a bit why Rochalizo chose her, his important friend, over someone else.
[Kotetsu receives a small, grateful glance. When Kim finds the presence of mind to move again, he picks up his pen and starts filling in some fields on the page in front of him. The culprit is Susato Mikotoba. The case is closed.]

Susato did do it. I don't know all of the details, but... it was her.

Okay...
[He takes a breath.]
Can you tell me what you do know?

[ He places a hand on his shoulder, leaning in a bit closer to him with worry on his face. ]
You couldn't have known at the time. She couldn't say anything and it's hard to see those things...

Taking a few slow breaths.
...]
Thank you.

[ He hesitates but he moves his hand to rest on Kim's back, trying to be more comforting without stepping over personal boundaries much. ]
You've been working so hard.

This is the truth that I needed to know.
It's painful, but... it's a relief, to finally know for sure.

[ He nods softly at him. ]
Continue the good work. And I'll say it again, don't blame yourself for something overlooked. We're all human here working with limited time.

And... I know. [A sigh.] I'm well-acquainted with failure. It's always been a normal part of detective work.
But even when you think you've gotten used to it, some failures just hit differently than the others.

I understand failure, too.
